There are various avenues in which to meditate the Word of God. The first way to meditate is to mutter God’s Word. To mutter means to speak things quietly
or under our breath, speaking to ourselves regardless of whether people are present to hear us.
Everyone knows how to mutter. We may mutter while we are driving our car, or maybe while we are shopping. Have you ever lost something and asked yourself
out loud, “Now where did I leave that? Where was the last place I remember seeing it?” This is exactly what it means to mutter and is actually one
of the definitions given for meditation.
We can use muttering as a means to meditate God’s Word. During our study
we can take one or two of the scriptures and mutter them to ourselves during the day, keeping them fresh within us and allowing them to saturate and
wash through us.
Romans 10:8 says, “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart.” And Jesus said, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew
12:34). There is power in the Word of God, and we need that power working in us and affecting our entire lives. Muttering God’s Word to ourselves sounds
like this:
“My God shall supply all my needs according to His riches in glory. God meets my needs, not according to my needs, but according to His riches. Jesus,
You said that He came so I would have life and have it more abundantly. You are the great El Shaddai, the God Who is more than enough to meet my every
need.”
That is meditating on God’s provision, based on what He has already promised. This will begin to affect our outlook and mindset. We are meditating on God’s
abundant supply and on the fact that our Heavenly Father provides for us.
It is easy to see how we can meditate in this fashion any time and any place. At the office when important decisions are necessary, we can mutter to ourselves
something like this:
“Jesus has been made wisdom to me. I have access to the wisdom of God. All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ and He dwells in
me. The Holy Spirit will reveal the answer to me.”
Psalm 63:5-6 says, “My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips. When I remember You on my bed,
I meditate on You in the night watches.”
When we remember who this God is that lives inside us, we are, in fact, meditating on Him. He is a faithful God and He will be faithful to us when we walk
in His Word. He is a merciful God; His mercy endures forever. He is a God of abundance; He has given all that He has to us.
Meditating on the Lord will bring our mind and emotions under control. Our soul will become satisfied as we mutter to ourselves about the wonders of God.
This is the most powerful tool to use to keep control of our thoughts in times of instability. Many times we begin to waver in our minds. We question whether
we are going to make it through this problem. But if we will meditate and mutter on Who God is and what He had promised, our thoughts will have to
be quiet long enough to hear what our mouths are saying.
The Word of God coming out your mouth will change your attitude and mindset toward the situations you face. As you renew your mind, you will begin to take
on the attitude of Christ.
